  CASE STUDY:

Oil/Water emulsion separation

 THE CHALLENGE

The manufacturing industry produces multiple types of mixed oil and water streams. These streams are created as a result of: Parts Washing, Tool Cooling, Metal Forming or Mop Water. The issue with each of these streams is that there can be high levels of suspended solids and emulsified oils in unknown concentrations. The usual requirement is to remove the solids and oil from the stream to meet discharge regulations. Often the filtered component is reused in house. On occasion, the concentrated component can also be reused in house. The issue is that most forms of conventional or membrane filtration will foul/plug after a short time processing these streams.  The challenge is to identify a reliable, economical and environmentally safe method for processing these streams.

THE SOLUTION

Many companies have contacted Filtration Systems, Inc. (FSI) to provide a solution that would work better and more reliably than other forms of filtration. FSI has developed a proprietary PVDF 1” tubular UF membrane with a tightly controlled pore distribution and a robust construction specifically for these applications. The 1” Tubular UF membrane has an open geometry that is resistant to plugging, can concentrate solids and oils to high levels, and can be mechanically cleaned with minimal downtime and without expensive/hazardous chemicals. FSI customers have been successfully using this proprietary membrane for over two decades.

OVERVIEW

FSI is a North American membrane company with international distribution. FSI manufactures the highest quality 1” Tubular Ultra Filtration membranes in a variety of Molecular Weight Cut-Offs and Polymer types. FSI is the only company to offer Polyether Sulfone 1” tubular UF Membranes.  FSI also sells ancillary connecting components, in PVC and CPVC. At FSI, our mission is to provide premium filtration products and services at highly competitive price.

Mexichem is a leading supplier of innovative solutions in building and infrastructure, data communications, irrigation, and basic and advanced materials. The company contributes to global development by delivering an extended portfolio of products to high growth sectors including building and infrastructure, housing, agriculture, data communications and water management. Mexichem operates in 41 countries, with 137 facilities worldwide and more than 22,000 employees.

CASE STUDY:

MEXICHEM SPECIALTY RESINS, INC

THE CHALLENGE

Mexichem Specialty Resins, Inc. produces various chemical products at their New Jersey facility. One of these products is a PVC latex adhesive used in the automotive industry. In order to maximize production efficiency, this PVC latex stream needs to be dewatered as much as possible, prior to being sent to an evaporator.

Mexichem discovered that 1” diameter tubular ultrafiltration (UF) membranes were the best technology for this dewatering process. The problem was that the PVC Latex would settle on the surface of the UF membranes and solidify. This resulted in the UF membranes only lasting 4-6 weeks.  It was very costly, difficult and time consuming to replace the UF membranes on such a frequent basis.

THE SOLUTION

Mexichem contacted Filtration Systems, Inc. (FSI) to see if they could offer another type of tubular UF membrane that would work better/longer. FSI studied the problem and developed a proprietary Polyether Sulfone 1” tubular UF membrane specifically for the application. Mexichem has been using this proprietary membrane for over two decades, with increased efficiency and averaging over 6 months between replacements.

CASE STUDY:

The Nisshin OILLIO Group, Ltd.

THE CHALLENGE

The Nisshin OilliO Group (NOG) Nagoya Plant produces various types of edible oil products at their Nagoya, Japan facility. To maximize product quality, it is necessary to clarify the edible oils as much as possible prior to final processing.  Edible oils are extremely viscous and permanently foul most types of filtration.

NOG Nagoya Plant discovered that 1” diameter tubular ultrafiltration (UF) membranes were the best technology for this clarifying process. The problem was that typical PVDF membranes had too large of a pore distribution (70kD to 140kD). This resulted in undesirable particulates often passing into the final production process. It was very costly and time consuming to continually test the process stream on a frequent basis.  If particulate was found, it often resulted in either having to discard, or reprocess the batch.

THE SOLUTION

NOG Nagoya Plant contacted Filtration Systems, Inc. (FSI) to see if they could offer another type of tubular UF membrane that would work better and more reliably. FSI studied the problem and developed a proprietary Polyether Sulfone 1” tubular UF membrane with a tightly controlled pore distribution specifically for the NOG Nagoya Plant application. The result was that the edible oil was able to be clarified to a very high-quality level on a consistent basis. NOG Nagoya Plant has been successfully using this proprietary membrane for nearly two decades.

If you are in need of tubular ultra filtration membranes for your company, give us a call today for more information!

  • How are Tubular Ultra Filtration Membranes different?

Tubular ultra filtration membranes are unlike any other type of membrane geometry in that they are mechanically cleanable.  With a simple “sponge ball” cleaning process, the surface of the membranes can be scoured without removing them from the system.  This mechanical cleaning effectively scrubs off contaminants that can not be removed by chemical cleaning alone.

  • What are Tubular Ultra Filtration Membranes used for?

Tubular membrane filtration is a common method of removing pollutants from water in industrial wastewater filtering systems. Because industrial processes can produce dirty water containing chemicals or metals, tubular membrane filtration is used as part of an industrial water filtration system to provide good contaminant reduction.

Tubular membrane filtration is also used to clarify and/or concentrate fluid streams for various types of industrial and food grade applications.

Tubular membrane filtration is a pressure-driven cross-flow filtering method that separates suspended solids from liquids using a microporous membrane. A process solution is forced to flow along a membrane surface under pressure in this cross-flow process.

After passing through a tubular membrane filtering system, the water can be released, sent for reverse osmosis (RO), or further processed for plant reuse/recycling.

  • What products do you offer?

Filtration Systems, Inc. is a recognized supplier of premium tubular ultra filtration membranes and ancillary components. To better serve its customers, Filtration Systems, Inc. is now supplying cleaning agents to maintain optimum operating efficiency of your membrane systems.

  • What is the difference between PVC and CPVC?

The fundamental distinction between CPVC and PVC is the temperature range that each can sustain. PVC can withstand temperatures up to 140 degrees Fahrenheit, while CPVC can withstand temperatures up to 200 degrees Fahrenheit. Both CPVC and PVC will soften at those temperatures, increasing the chance of joints and pipes failing, and hence the plumbing system failing.
